Legacy Reborn: Prelude Returns
The new Prelude marks Honda’s return to the two-door coupe segment after more than two decades. Honda describes it as a “sporty icon, reimagined” with hybrid-electric power, Type R hardware, and a new Honda S+ Shift system to simulate performance shifting.
It’s not merely a novelty: this new Prelude shares its hybrid powertrain with the Civic Hybrid while inheriting suspension and braking components from the Civic Type R—designed to deliver sharper handling and driver engagement.
Prelude Powertrain & Performance
The heart of the Prelude is a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine paired with a two-motor hybrid system. The combined output is about 200 horsepower with 232 lb-ft of torque.
Rather than a conventional transmission, Honda uses a direct-drive hybrid unit with the new S+ Shift mode. This mode simulates up- and downshifts via paddle shifters and rev matching, giving a more “sporty” feel to the drive.
Honda also estimates very favorable fuel efficiency: anticipating EPA estimates of 46 mpg city / 41 mpg highway.
Chassis, Handling & Brakes
What gives the new Prelude serious athletic promise is its underpinnings. The front suspension employs a dual-axis strut design borrowed from Type R lineage. The rear is a multi-link setup, and adaptive dampers are tuned for a balance of sport and daily comfort.
Braking power comes via Brembo 4-piston front calipers on 13.8-inch rotors; the rear uses 12-inch discs.
Additional handling aids include Honda Agile Handling Assist which provides torque vectoring via braking. Personalize your experience with drive modes for Comfort, GT, Sport, and Individual. Prelude is tuned for agility through its refined steering system. While four-wheel steering is not returning, the engineers seem to have focused on delivering confidence and responsiveness through chassis balance and electronic aids.
Interior & Technology
Inside, the Prelude is a 2+2 coupe (rear seats are compact). Honda gives rear passengers about 32 inches of legroom, and rear seats fold for flexible cargo access. Materials are more premium than in the Civic: soft-touch trim, leather-trimmed sport seats (heated), and a flat-bottom steering wheel contribute to a driver-centric feel.
The driver sees a 10.2-inch digital cluster and a 9.0-inch central touchscreen with integrated wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Google. Wireless phone charging, Bose premium audio system, Wi-Fi hotspot, and over-the-air updates are standard inclusions.
